How does Refer a CN Friend work?

Refer a new applicant to the CN Railroaders in the Community program between January 1, 2017 and November 30, 2017.

If the new applicant you refer qualifies for a grant with an eligible charitable organization or youth amateur sports team, his or her charity gets a donation and your charity receives an additional grant equal to the amount it originally qualified for. Refer a CN Friend and get double the grant for your charity; refer two CN Friends and get triple the normal grant; and so on.

There are no limits to the number of people you can refer – which means no limits to the grants you can accumulate for your charity!

Here are some examples of how fast the money can add up:

Example 1:
Suzanne received a $1,000 CN Railroader in the Community Employee Volunteer Grant in 2017.

She refers her coworker who is new to the program and who qualifies for a grant after meeting the eligibility criteria. At the end of the year, Suzanne’s charity receives an additional $1,000.

Suzanne then refers her father, a CN retiree who has been volunteering for years but never applied for a CN Railroader in the Community grant before. He too qualifies for a grant, enabling Suzanne’s charity to receive another $1,000 – for a total of $3,000 in 2017!

Example 2:
Steve received a $500 CN Railroader in the Community Youth Amateur Sports Grant for volunteering with his daughter’s soccer team in 2017.

Steve gets his spouse involved on the team and refers her to the CN Railroaders in the Community program. She qualifies for a grant for the first time after meeting the eligibility criteria, enabling Steve’s sports team to receive a great donation:

$500 original grant
+ $250 family volunteer grant
+ $500 Refer a Friend bonus
Total grant = $1,000!

There are no limits to how many CN Friends Suzanne or Steve can refer – which means no limits to how often their charities can benefit from the many acts of kindness.

Who is eligible to refer?

You can refer a CN Friend if you have received a CN Railroader in the Community grant (except a Matched Fundraising grant) in 2016.

Who can I refer?

You can refer a CN Friend who volunteers at least 40 hours in a calendar year at an eligible charitable organization or with a youth amateur sports team and who is a:

  • permanent, full-time employee of CN for at least six (6) months
  • permanent, part-time employee of CN for at least twelve (12) months
  • family member of an eligible CN employee
  • CN retiree
  • spouse/survivor of a CN retiree

Do all volunteer activities count under the program?

The people you refer must volunteer at least 40 hours at an eligible charitable organization or with a youth amateur sports team. Matched Fundraising initiatives do not qualify under the Refer a CN Friend incentive.

How do I get recognized for the referral?

Employees: Simply provide your first name, last name and CN Employee Number (if applicable) to your CN Friend who must enter this information on his or her grant application form on the CN Railroaders in the Community website.

Retirees: Your CN Friend simply needs to enter your first name, last name and the CN Employee Number (PIN) you had as an active employee (if available) in the appropriate field of their grant application form on the CN Railroaders in the Community website.

If you do not have a PIN, we will match you with your first and last name.

Can I refer someone who is already a CN Railroader in the Community?

The idea is to encourage NEW, eligible people into the program who have never before received a grant. You cannot refer an existing CN Railroader in the Community.

Is there a maximum my charity or youth sports team can receive under the Refer a CN Friend incentive?

There is no limit to how much you can accumulate for your charity. The more applicants you refer who qualify for a grant, the more your charity gets!

When does my charity receive the additional grant money?

The charity will receive the additional grant money at the end of each year when program administrators calculate your credits.

I volunteer with a couple of different charities. Which one will receive the additional grant money?

You will be asked to identify which charity you would like to direct the additional money to on the grant application .

If you have already completed a grant application, program administrators will contact you to determine your preference.
