Rewards. Recognition. Benefits

As thousands of new railroaders join our ranks, our workforce is evolving. How we onboard, coach and develop the best railroaders in the industry is key to our shared success.

Our major investment in training and onboarding, including two new training facilities currently under construction, is a testament to our continued commitment to equipping them with the technical skills they need, and with knowledge about our business and what we stand for. This is one of the many reasons behind the unique sense of pride you’ll find at CN; our employees understand the crucial role they play in the big picture.

Onboarding

Our Onboarding program was created to welcome, orient and integrate new railroaders joining the company. At CN, Onboarding begins as soon as our candidates accept their employment offer and continues through the first 18 to 24 months of their career. Onboarding employees helps ensure they’re acquiring the necessary skills to be safe and productive, and the right knowledge about our company and what we are trying to do, so they understand how they fit into the overall game plan.

Technical Training

Our new railroaders kick start their CN career with paid training, so they can acquire the right skills to do their jobs safely and efficiently, day in and day out. Our technical training is a mix of classroom and on-the-job learning. Here’s an overview of a few of our training programs for some key positions in Operations.

Career Development

CN encourages career progression within the company, that’s why we support our employees’ development every step of the way — whether they’re just beginning their career at CN or seasoned professionals. As a CN employee, you can build your skills and knowledge through many courses and training programs in a variety of fields, namely:

  • Technical and job-specific skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Safety
  • Language skills

This includes hundreds of online, interactive courses that can be completed from the comfort of your home. What’s more, regardless of where you work in the company, you have a unique hands-on opportunity to learn more about our business. Even our non-unionized employees can experience first-hand the core of CN’s operations, thanks to our unique Railroad Certification Program.
